Project type
Observational Interview based documentary
Date
Jan, 2025
Location
Birghton, UK
Role
As a co-producer and editor of Generations of Sugar, I was involved in every stage of the storytelling process. From initial research and outreach to building rapport with Maria, the third-generation shop owner, I helped gain consent and establish trust, crucial in portraying such a personal story. During production, I worked closely with the team to shape the narrative, conduct interviews, and capture the emotional and historical essence of the shop.
I led the post-production process, editing the film to balance archival context with present-day challenges.

A short yet deeply meaningful project that I had the privilege of working on alongside Ricardo Aguiar & Berke Kastner
As students, getting out into the real world to find compelling stories isn’t always easy, gaining consent, building trust, and navigating rejections is all part of the process. But in our search for stories, we stumbled upon one that truly resonated with us - The story of Maria Greetham, a third-generation candy shop owner at Brighton Pier.
Her family’s shop, a cherished piece of Brighton’s history, has survived for decades. But now, she faces the heartbreaking reality of closing its doors. The pandemic dealt a heavy blow, pushing her toward a difficult decision that so many small business owners have had to make.
This project made us realize how vital family-run businesses are, not just to the local economy but to the very soul of a community. The increasing closure of these businesses is more than just a financial loss, it’s the fading away of stories, traditions, and a sense of belonging.
Despite the setbacks we faced while filming, this experience has been an eye-opener. The lessons we’ve taken from it go beyond just storytelling, they’ve shaped our understanding of resilience, change, and the hidden struggles behind every small business that shuts its doors.
