Woman Behind the Scalpel is a short observational documentary profiling Professor Claire Smith, a pioneering anatomist, educator, and the first female Inspector of Anatomy for Ireland. The film explores Claire’s groundbreaking contributions to medical education, including her role in developing 3D-printed anatomical models and leading the UK’s first public human dissection in over 200 years.
The documentary was crafted through in-depth interviews with Claire’s students, colleagues, family, and friends. From the dissection room to quiet personal moments, it reveals the woman behind the title, not only a professor and scientist, but a mentor, mother, and changemaker in a male-dominated field.
The film blends personal storytelling with archival articles, intimate B-roll, and a strong emotional arc. I worked closely on the research, production design, direction, cinematography, and post-production editing using Adobe Premiere Pro and Audition. The project emphasises themes of legacy, visibility, and the importance of body donation in medical training.
